If you Come Softly

What they had was special. How could a moment of eye contact truly generate true love? He was black. She was Jewish. Their worlds were different, but to them that’s not what mattered. They shared similar feelings that were hidden and kept apart from the rest of the world. Their love was even more dangerous and deeper than the waves of an ocean that roughly flow toward you. You are scared deep inside, running away in fear knowing that it’s possible to get hurt. But for some reason, you still seem eager to jump the waves even if your life is in risk.

His name was Jeremiah-envious and erudite. His mama Nalia was a writer. His father Norton was a flim director. They were according to several magazines, the most romantic couple until they divorced after Norton suddenly cheated on her. Jeremiah felt good inside his own skin but still wanted to scream. The thoughts rolling around in his mind scared him. He just wanted someone to tell him that everything was going to be okay. He didn’t see his father too often. Traveling around time to time filming movies every now and then.

Her name was Ellie or Elishia-likable and loving. Her family included herself, dad, mom and three older siblings who no longer lived with them. She had a negative attitude towards her mother after leaving the family twice and eventually came back both times. Ellie knew the pain of her mother leaving would haunt her forever. And it did. Her father always worked, trying to earn things for his family that he never had. She too wanted to scream. She was like a baby bird in its mother’s nest ready to fly away. She wanted the world to hear her cry in the need for sympothy and love.

It was the first day of school. Jeremiah and Ellie had accidentally knocked into each other. It only took a second of eye contact to let them know that they were meant for each other. From that moment on, they were always together. Holding hands in public. Finally ready to let the world know that they weren’t scared to express their true feelings for eachother. “There’s this poem,” he said. “That my mom used to read to me.” ‘If you come softly as the wind within the trees, you may hear what I hear. See what sorrow sees. If you come as lightly, as threading dew, I will take you gladly, nor ask more of you.’

After losing his breath in a tragic faint, Jeremiah now is in a different world. Heaven. It leaves Ellie in tears for the rest of her life knowing that the only guy in the world who understands her is watching. Knowing that she is thinking of him in every way she can. Wanting him to know that the time they shared together was meaningful and filled with timeless joy. She looks down at her hands. Begging the world to stop. As she is simply only fifteen years old.
